» Can stress cause an oily scalp/an increase in sebum production ? Can this
» increase in sebum cause further hairloss ?

In short, Yes!

DHEA levels increase during stress and DHEA can convert to DHT - hence more oiliness/ hairloss.

Pete

According to Roger Mason, “VITAMIN C MEGADOSES- mega doses of anything are bad for you. Linus Pauling was wrong. Taking more than 250 mg of vitamin C has severe long term side effects.”

Who is Roger Mason?

“Roger Mason is a nationally known research chemist who promotes holistic health, natural products and life extension. He writes unique and cutting edge books on his findings. He appears daily on national radio and television shows advocating natural health. His weekly Internet column in Longevity News is read by 100,000 people around the world.”

Though I disagree with a couple of his views (e.g. chlorella and spirulina), I thought that his assessment of various herbs and supplements was worthy of pause.

Hall of Shame -Roger Mason

"The natural supplement industry is no better than the porno industry when it comes to character. Like used car dealers, this business is full of liars, cheats, thieves, psychopaths, hucksters and snake oil salesmen. Let’s review some of the most prominent scams, frauds, and useless promotions we see so heavily advertised and promoted. Please read my ninth book The Supplements You Need for free at www.youngagain.org.

COLLOIDAL MINERALS- almost dead, but the little fatso behind it never went to jail.

CORAL CALCIUM- blackboard chalk for $39.95 is almost over, and one promoter was run out of the country. Calcium carbonate is, in fact, blackboard chalk.

ACAI, GOJI, MANGOSTEEN, POMEGRANATE- are all junk.

CHONDROITIN- still sells tens of millions of dollars a year although it has no value at because it cannot be absorbed by our intestines. This is a mass delusion built of profits.

LYCOPENE- proven to have no value by blood serum tests on over 30,000 men. This is now accepted as gospel among everyone. No one else has exposed this. Lycopene is useless! The “science” behind it is fraudulent. Plasma “studies” are worthless because it is fat soluble and can only be measured in the blood serum.

HGH SUPPLEMENTS- none of these work, but you can’t tell people that. Real rhGH is now “only” $100 a month for 30 IU of Chinese Jintropin and can be used sublingually.

NONE OF THEM WORK- please understand that.

NONI JUICE- useless, but still not dead after all these years. People are really stupid.

COLOSTRUM- thank the dairy industry for hawking this junk.

BREAST ENHANCERS- only implants will enlarge your breasts ladies- if you want plastic breasts, that is.

RESVERATROL- won’t strengthen your immunity. The “studies” are just paid ads in
medical journals with cell cultures or extremely overdosed rats.

HOMEOPATHIC €œREMEDIE€- for 100 years now a few people have believed expensive little bottles of plain water have magical powers. The promoters admit there are no ingredients. No published studies of value in five decades.
SPLENDA® AKA SUCRALOSE- a halogenated, synthetic poison

CANOLA OIL- there are no canola plants, this is a genetic disaster full of toxic erucic acid. This is from the rapeseed plant and should be banned for human or animal use.

SAW PALMETTO- useless and has 1 part in 3,000 plant sterols.

PYGEUM AFRICANUM- just as useless as saw palmetto.

DEER ANTLER VELVET- you’re kidding, right?

CHORELLA AND SPIRULINA- always have and always will be useless.

5-HTP- won’t help you lose weight no matter how much you take.

SEXUAL REJUVENATION products- all of them are snake oil.

MACA ROOT- fibrous, inedible turnip fed to livestock in South America.

CHRYSIN- won’t lower your estrogen levels or do anything else of value

MGN-3 and AHCC- these are both made up promotions folks.

BALDNESS CURES- hair cloning is still 10 to 20 years away.

WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCTS- none of them work, none of them have ever worked and none of them will ever work. The way to lose weight is better food choices and exercise. Healthy diet and lifestyle are the way to stay slim all your life while you literally eat all you want.

VITAMIN C MEGADOSES- mega doses of anything are bad for you. Linus Pauling was wrong. Taking more than 250 mg of vitamin C has severe long term side effects.

POLICOSANOL- won’t lower your cholesterol no matter how much you take. A promotional fraud. The “studies” are all from that communist sinkhole Cuba.

RED RICE YEAST- is toxic and has almost no science behind it.

ORAL S.O.D.- S.O.D. must be injected to have any benefit. Topical S.O.D. is great for your skin, but is not absorbed into the bloodstream. There are no “special delivery systems” so it can be ingested orally.

CLA (conjugated linoleic acid)- how can eating more fat help you lose fat?

COCONUT OIL- will not help you lose weight or do anything else beneficial.

This is only to be used occasionally in small amounts like palm oil.

CINNAMON EXTRACTS- there are no studies to support value for diabetes.
MSM- will not help your arthritis and there is no science at all behind it.

ENEMAS- are usually a sexual fetish, not a health practice. Autopsies consistently prove there is no impacted fecal matter in our intestines; they are self cleaning.

EVENING PRIMROSE OIL- just take inexpensive flax oil to get your omega-3s.
WHEY PROTEIN- a waste product of cheese making is full of allergenic, indigestible lactose. Leave it to the dairy industry to promote waste products as health supplements.

BEE PRODUCTS- if it comes from a bee you can bet it has no value at all.

7-KETO DHEA- an inexpensive, ineffective, unproven analog of real DHEA.

NIACIN MEGADOSES- the wrong way to lower cholesterol. Taking mega doses of niacin or anything else has serious long term side effect.

HORNY GOAT WEED (Epimedium)- will not lift your libido or enhance your sex life.

GINGER ROOT- great for seasickness, but won’t do anything for arthritis.

LOW DOSE CoQ10- you need at least 100 mg a day and no less. CoQ10 now costs $4,000 a kilogram, so companies are selling 30 mg doses with €œspecial delivery systems.€

MODIFIED CITRUS PECTIN- inexpensive apple or citrus pectin has great value for lowering cholesterol and other uses. This is just an overpriced rip-off.

TONGKAT ALI- wouldn’t raise your testosterone if you ate 10 pounds of it.

BILBERRY- won’t help your eyesight or anything else

GRAVIOLA- is not a Magic Cancer Cure

HOODIA CACTUS- is anything but a miracle weight loss product

STEVIA- is not a healthy substitute for sugar.

ARGININE- won’t raise your GH levels or do anything else of value."

  1. Lie.

  2. Respond to the lie, over and over and over again.

How many experts agree with Roger Mason? I would like to know b/c I have been taking Red Yeast Rice for years in lieu of Lipitor to lower LDL cholesterol and I have had amazing results. The Chinese have been using this herb for centuries and don’t seem to have any problem with it.

I don’t have the expertise to disagree with this guy, but I am just wondering where he got his data for his study.

Half the things they say are useless are not useless

pygeum is not useless nor is Saw Palmetto, all my natural DHT blockers saved my hair

this sounds like a page written by the drug and pharmaceutical industry

sounds like someone who hates naturals and says none of them work

» “Horsetail contains an ingredient that destroys thiamine (vitamin B1),
» which could lead to deficiency with long-term use. People who have
» thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency or poor nutrition should avoid horsetail,

it sounds like you worship this guy and repeat everything he says as gospel, much like the GIB morons do with Lawrence

cant you think for yourself

» Damon,

» There are some who consider over 2000 mg/day of Vitamin C “a large dose.”

drink too much water and your brain swells , and your internal organs burst and you die

DUH

why is this a surprise that huge amounts of a supplement are bad for you

Roger Mason is not an advocate of the pharmaceutical companies’ hair loss remedies; quite to the contrary.

He also thinks that most of these herbs lose their effectiveness after six months use. And I am beginning to believe him. Might be a good idea to rotate our use of certain herbs (as Jacob mentioned in another post in another forum).

Actually, this information was provided by the US National Library of Medicine.

saw palmetto has no effect on some guys
on some guys it has a dramatic effect
as i added other dht blockers the more i added the better my hair did, and 8 yrs later its still going strong

to say that these herbs are useless is going overboard
to say they work on some and on others they dont , is more accurate

which is an arm of the medicine community, which supports doctors

anyone who believes that doctors are open to natural healing and natural supplements is fooling themselves

tradtional med school gives about one hour course on natural healing, most docs pooh pooh it and their response to any malady is, here is a presription for so and so drug, most docs think naturals and vitamins minerals etc is all hogwash

why would I listen to what a doctor says, unless he is a nutritionist or holistic medical doctor

"Literally every drug store, health food store and vitamin catalog has various saw palmetto products…Some of these claim to be potent extracts containing “85% fatty acids and sterols”. Many also contain other herbs such as - Pygeum, nettles, pumpkin seed oil, lycopene, and other additives.

Baloney fellas!

SAW PALMETTO IS USELESS! Any chemical analysis of saw palmetto, Pygeum species, etc. basically shows only common fatty acids like you find in your food every day- oleic, myristic, palmitic, and others. The actual active ingredient is, in fact, a plant alcohol called “beta-sitosterol”. The problem is that saw palmetto only has about 1 part in 3,000 of mixed phytosterols- or 1/30th of one per cent. So, if you ate a whole pound of saw palmetto berries you would only get about 150 mg of beta-sitosterol. You would litrally have to eat 3,000 capsules of saw palmetto to equal one capsule of phytosterols. Even the most powerful and expensive extracts are not much better. What about the saw palmetto products sold in Europe? They are standardized for beta-sitosterol content, are by prescription only, tend to be weak, and are very expensive."

Baloney, Saw palmetto saved my hair
guys like you who come on here with these bullshit studies, or who something didnt work on saying it doesnt work on everyone, we get tired of that

if something doesnt work on you fine
dont be jealous because it worked on someone else

Hang ups,

Stop arguing with the facts. I am providing information that could save you and other posters here money. But instead, you’d rather I keep quiet so that fragile ego of yours will remain intact.

You are NOT an authority. Just remember that.

Saw palmetto has the highest amount of free form fatty acids of any natural substance. Saw Palmetto reduced DHT levels in the prostate by 32 percent in this study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/eutils/escan.fcgi?db=PubMed&uid=11337315&dopt=Citation&field=Title&DateField=MeshDate

Here is the money sentence: “In the randomized trial, tissue DHT levels were reduced by 32% from 6.49 to 4.40 ng/g in the SPHB group (P <0.005), with no significant change in the placebo group”

my opinion----saw palmetto would seemingly be helpful on paper, but not as much as finasteride. But we wont know unless there is a big trial and that ain’t gonna happen, so I suppose folks just have to make decisions based on current information.

More on why Saw Palmetto “should” help DHT levels,…

Assay Title: Determination of fatty acids in Serenoa repens (Saw Palmetto or sabel) by gas chromatography.

Scope: This assay can be used to determine fatty acid distribution in Saw Palmetto fruit, oil extract, and blended powders. Determination is performed using gas chromatography, after transesterification of the triglycerides, followed by conversion into the methyl ester.

Safety Precautions: Consult the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for any chemical used that is unfamiliar. All chemicals should be considered hazardous - avoid direct physical contact. For more safety information, see http://hazard.com/msds/.

Background: Saw palmetto fruit contains several principles thought to have physiological activity, including fatty acids such as caproic, capric, lauric, myristic, oleic, palmitic, stearic, and 1 to 2% essential oils. Furthermore, it contains sterols and high molecular weight polysaccharides. Purified ethanolic or CO2 extracts of saw palmetto usually contain 70 to 80% free fatty acids. The fatty acids present are in several forms - free fatty acids, fatty acid esters of the fatty alcohols, and fatty acid esters of the phytosterols. This oil is commonly blended with excipients to form a dry powder at 30% free fatty acids concentration.

Standards: Note: This is not an all-inclusive listing of sources for reference standards. World wide there are many reputable suppliers of botanical reference standards whose product may be used. However quality control protocol and/or government regulation may mandate further qualification of the materials for proper identity and purity.

Of these, the myrsitic, linolenic, palmitic, and lauric have been shown if memeory serves to inhibit alpha five reductase at varrying concentrations.

Sterols probably just block androgen receptors more than inhibit alpha five reductase enzymes. Especially beta sitosterol.

An old study posted by hairsite done in Italy showed that Saw Palmetto reduced sebum, improved hair growth when given to men and a saw palmetto topical also helped the results further.

Benji, that is interesting. Thanks for the information.

Here is a newsflash, moron you dont know what the hell you are talking about
lots of guys achieve fantastic results from natural DHT blockers, some guys dont respond to them

same with prop rogaine etc it depends on the person
to say that these supplements dont work is a blatant lie

dont be jealous since they didnt work on YOU and call them useless,
it only makes you look like a fool

I guess then, that when I added Saw Palmetto to my regimen in 1999, and I was losing 200 to 300 hairs a day, shedding like mad,and my fallout went down to 20 hairs a day, within two weeks, and has stayed there for 8 YEARS, and my SEE THROUGH hair on top front and sides, thickened to the thickness it was in high school…and has STAYED THAT WAY FOR 8 YRS

that is just in my imagination
