Question about scalp condition

Hello Everyone,

Been awhile since I’ve been here. I have been on Hanginthere’s regimen for about 3 years now.(Thankx again Hangin!!) after having a small HT procedure (500 grafts) which did more harm than good, and started killing my hair…

I am minus the DHT blockers as I am sensitive. Also I use the lazer comb 2-3 times a week. Which seems to help. I’ve been a pretty good responder to the naturals with some ups and downs, but satisfied with my results.

Recently I died my hair a dark brown, almost black. As I remember doing this in the past had made my hair look thicker which was my intention…for the first few days worked great, my hair was thicker. Plus the grey hairs that had accumulated were covered.

Problem is my scalp became severely irritated, very itchy. This was about 2 weeks ago…Since then I’ve been shedding (approx 60-100 hairs in the shower) and I have very bad dandruff. Most of my hairloss seems to occur in the morning. After my scalp has dried out overnight, and is very ithcy in the morning around the crown, front and back of my scalp.

I’ve tried the Nizoral (doesn’t seem to help) along with other dandruff remedies. So I’m thinking something must have screwed with my scalp condition.

I would appreciate any suggestions to help reverse this process as now I’m beginning to see the areas thin again around my front and crown. It’s not critical yet. So I’m hoping to get a grip on this before my psyche goes haywire again.

Thanks to any responders

Jailbird, curcumin and resveratrol are an inexpensive way to treat scalp conditions (e.g. psoriasis). Many brands of these are available. I have used Jarrow in the past with good results, a significant reduction in inflammation.

Thanks Natural,

I had been using those in conjunction till recently…I had just run out before I colored my hair…will be implementing them shortly…That hair dye did a big time number on my scalp, which has caused the shedding issues. I’m hoping this will reverse this situation.

Will do…I just woke up this morning and counted 40 hairs on my pillow…Word to the wise,My hair had been in decent condition going on 3 years now…,but looking for that extra something. I made a rash decision to color my hair…now it looks like it’s costing me between 150-200 hairs a day…my scalp is very itchy…and this seems to be what’s causing the fallout…I’ll never color my hair again…a little bit of grey would be much better than all this fallout.

Jailbird I can’t imagine dying your hair will cause hair loss or to accelerate hair loss. I’ve never heard of anything to this nature nor come across any text on it. Maybe something else has changed in your life style? new meds? stopping of meds? stress? depression?

btw, hey the natural, seen or heard from hangin lately? i find it odd he no longer posts… as annoying as he was i hope he’s ok.

mj,

Some time ago, I introduced your good friend, Hangin’, to ImmortalHair’s website, and he has been participating over there as recently as last week.

Hey MJ,

Yes…it is weird,I had died my hair in the past and nothing more than a few hairs from the dye job were affected. This time I believe something changed with my scalp condition…as the next morning when I woke up there was a bunch of hair on my pillow(now every morning there is about 30-40…I didn’t worry at first thinking some hair was burned out from the dye,but my head was itching like crazy…and I noticed some dye had made it onto my scalp…

but day after day…my hair kept coming out over night on the pillow,in the shower…and right now…I have the worst dandruff of my life…which the past was only a problem from time to time…

My feeling is that something from the dye damaged my scalp, because right now…the dandruff I have is caked all over my scalp…and as far as life changes…yes…there has been an added amount of stress…but nothing like this has occured in the past from stress related issues…

I did start to incorporate the curcumin/resveretrol into my regimen 2 days ago…so I hope I start to see improvement…As of yet though…I’m still not out of the woods. I gotta hope that this will adjust and the hair I lost will grow back…it’s just a bummer cuz my hair was in pretty good shape for some time…

natural haha we were more like arch enemies online lol. but i don’t wish him any ill will. btw, u two weren’t cousines?

Jailbird,

It may be that your hair is going through the telogen phase.

Telogen phase
The telogen phase is the resting phase of the hair follicle.[6] The club hair is the final product of a hair follicle in the telogen stage, and is a dead, fully keratinized hair.Fifty to one-hundred club hairs are shed daily from a normal scalp” (Hair follicle - Wikipedia).

Just wanted to update…
Decided after this morning (I lost more than 100 hairs in the shower maybe 200,there was a big patch in the drain…,twenty to thirty in the comb)…that I decided to shave my hair down…My hair was getting whispy on the front hairline…trying also to remove the dyed hair.

MJ, I here what your saying about the telogen phase, which may be part of what’s going on,but my hair was doing well, up until the dye job…and now I have the worst dandruff of my life…itching constantly…along with all this fall out…
It has become see through, and red…

I shaved it with a 5 guard…so as to keep my strip scar covered in back…My hair is looking very see through in front…and in the back it’s patchy…thick areas with quarter size thin spots…like chemo…makes sense since I’ve lost at least 2000 hairs in the last three weeks…before when I had my hair pretty short about a year and a half ago…It looked good…there was no place to really see through, now…it’s like WTF!!!
it’s hard to look at myself.

really bummed…
gotta hope I can heal my scalp and get some regrowth . Hopefully when my hair gets back to it’s normal length…I won’t look like a freak…

Natural, question for you…are you currently using TOCO-8…and if so…how well did/does it work for you?

thanks for responses guys…

Just got home from the office…what a bummer when I looked in the mirror…honestly most of my front hair seems like it’s vanished…I was a Norwood scale two a few weeks ago…now I’m a 3 easily…and if this crazy fallout doesn’t stop…I’m sure I’ll be worse…

My scalp is red and irritated…full of dandruff…and my hair just keeps coming out on the touch…I’m wondering if I poisoned my scalp??? don’t know, but I look 10 years older than I did this morning(after I shaved off the dyed hair)…terrible…

This all started because I decided to have hair transplant work done in front on both sides,I was thinning a bit there, nothing too drastic, then…my hair started shedding and thinning quickly…I couldn’t take propecia due to the sides…so I turned to naturals from this board which helped alot…

What I would recommend to anyone thinking about a Hair Transplant is to make sure you can tolerate DHT blockers like propecia or dutasteride…as they will lessen the effect from the shock of surgery…and beware of bad surgeons…there are many pitfalls in HT surgery…the least of which is an acceleration of hairloss…

My hairloss accelerated immediately after mine…now I’m here…less that 4 years later…I lost much more hair than I would have… if I hadn’t done the procedure…and now my scalp has been poisoned and I’m loosing hair quicker than someone on chemo…(i poisoned it myself)

If I had to describe how I look…it is like someone who started receiving chemo…F%$k!!!
I’m gonna have to avoid social situations or stay inside for a few weeks, till this grows out a little. and hope and pray to god that this reverses itself.

Jailbird,

  1. If you haven’t already, stop using DHT blockers for now.

  2. Order or buy yourself some curcumin and resveratrol (e.g. Jarrow brand). This should help with the scalp inflammation. Take them in the morning.

  3. Toco-8 may help to thicken or regrow some of your hair. I have had positive results with it, better for me than Toco-Sorb: definitely thicker hair. Take it in the evening.

The natural why do you recommend he stops using dht blockers? From my understanding, and personal experience, using dht blockers usually cause sheds which eventually grow back. Stopping the dht blockers will not only result in further shed, but who knows if they’ll grow back.

Unless natural dht blockers work differently, then I wouldn’t know.

Actually, I am recommending that he choose a healthier approach to fighting hair loss.

DHT blockers (esp. pharmaceuticals) are not needed to stop one’s hair loss. Addressing inflammation is the key. And DHT blockers do a poor job of that, in my opinion.

Thank You Natural…

I will do so in the next few days when I get a chance…my laptop is screwed right now so I have to do everything online from the library.

Can you recommend a site that sells Toco-8…or do you know if it is carried in a health food store such as Whole Foods???

I have been taking the Resveratrol and Curcumin for the past few days…and the fallout seems to have slowed a bit since cutting my hair short…unfortunately now it’s see through so I’m probably going to have to apply toppik to the front…

I had my girlfriend take a look and she did agree that my scalp look patchy…like I was sick…and she said my entire scalp was inflamed all around the hair line…
but this may be beginning to subside I hope due to the res/curc combo…I’m hoping!!!

Thanks again for your replies…

Yeh natural gives solid advise. i just hope u realise that coming off a dht blocker will cause further shedding. i honestly don’t have much knowledge on natural treatments for hairloss, but that i do know. maybe it would the wiser if u slowly tapered off it and into a new treatment rather than abruptly stopping. just my $0.02

Sure jailbird, here is the site that I have used successfully in the past: http://www.primordialperformance.com/store/tocotrienols_vitamine_toco8.html

I wish you could wait (two - three months) after I’ve tried another tocotrienol product (by A C Grace), then I could give you my preference as to which.

But Toco-8 is a very good tocotrienol supplement, better than Jarrow’s Toco-Sorb in my opinion.

Just an update…I just went ahead and ordered the Toco8,Thanks again there Natural,so hoping this helps…I also ordered some Dermmatch to conceal until my hair improves…

I also went ahead and shaved my head…Had to do it, from how bad my scalp is/was and even with it 5 guard short,I continued to have major fall out issues…

My strip scar is pretty wide I’ve seen…healed well though, and the place where my grafts were put don’t show the pitting too badly…and my scalp seems to be finally healing…

An observation I made is what Kind of an impact the grafts do have on your existing hair…It’s been 3 1/2 years since I had it and you can see how it made my hair line thinner, by the bend into the perimeter pattern around the grafts, which also destroyed whatever existing hair I had in the graft areas…

I’ve been no better certainly, than I was before the surgery,(should never have done it)…If I could go back I would have hopefully found this forum before I made that rash decision…and I would have been fine…

So hoping I can get back what I lost before the dye job…and be happy with that…

Oh MJ…I haven’t really messed with the DHT blockers much…Had a rough go with finasteride after it really pumped my hair like 10 years ago…and the natural DHT blockers I’m a bit sensitive to I believe…

Jailbird, I hope that it will help as well. Please keep us informed as to your progress.

Just a quick update…Hair is growing in slowly, and looking pretty thin…but it’s what I expected…with the areas just behind the graft areas having been thinned out…

Flaky scalp is finally beginning to improve…not as bad as it used to be, but still pretty persistant dandruff…

Strip scar is just about covered…about another week it should be concealed…
Quick post about the Dermmatch,it does do a pretty effective job…especially concealing the thinner areas…not sure it’s so great for my hair though…so trying to use it sparingly…

I hope in about a month or two,I should feel better about my hair…people say I look good with short hair…but it’s not something I’m comfortable with…especially looking as thin as I do right behind the grafts…

thanks everyone…
