92% of men using propecia reported lower sexual arousal

"Men who have taken a popular pill for baldness say they’ve experienced persistent sexual dysfunction for months, or even years, after stopping the drug.

The new study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, found that men who take finasteride, sold under the brand names Propecia and Proscar, may develop an ongoing loss of libido and orgasm, even after they go off the medication.

In some cases, they could have other lasting sexual side effects, including premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction, according to lead researcher Dr. Michael Irwig of George Washington University’s medical school.

“It’s obviously having some effect on the brain,” Irwig told AOL Health. “It’s messing up different hormonal pathways. Some of these pathways are important for things like libido and sexual function.”

Finasteride, the most common hair-loss pill, has previously been linked to “reversible” sexual impairment, as noted on the drug’s label, said Irwig. But “this is the first series to find that symptoms persisted for at least three months despite stopping finasteride,” he added.

“Three months was the minimum, but some of these guys had sexual symptoms for years, some … for five to 10 years after,” he told AOL Health. “These were young guys with no medical problems, no psychiatric problems, who happened to develop these side effects.”

Irwig and his team interviewed 71 men aged 21 to 46 who had taken Propecia or Proscar and reported new sexual side effects after they started the drugs. None of the participants had a history of sexual dysfunction or other conditions that might have contributed, Irwig said – and some had only been on finasteride for a few days.

Ninety-four percent said they’d experienced low sexual desire, 92 percent reported a dip in sexual arousal and 69 percent had trouble with orgasm, according to the findings. Another 92 percent said they developed erectile dysfunction after taking finasteride.

On average, participants had been on the baldness drug for 28 months and had chronic sexual problems for an average of 40 months, the research showed.

But 10 percent of those studied had used finasteride for less than a month, Irwig told AOL Health.

“It’s scary,” he said. “For the lack of orgasm and libido, there is no treatment.”

Other reported adverse side effects of finasteride are depression, suicidal thoughts and anxiety. Merck is currently fighting a number of lawsuits involving the drug, including one in Canada and another in Connecticut.

The company does not warn of possible psychological or persistent sexual problems in information about finasteride on its website, nor does it mention those symptoms on its U.S. labeling. Irwig said the drug does carry warning labels in the U.K. and Sweden about ongoing sexual impairment.

“Be aware that this is a potential sexual side effect,” he cautioned. “If somebody chooses to take this medicine, there is that risk. They have to make the decision that it’s a risk they’re willing to take.”

I’m not surprised.

That is pure crap, if they really have evidence put it in a medical journal, till it not appearence on pubmed, I will not believe it. Is just pure crap of a unknown doctor that is part of the lawsuits, nothing serious.

Quote from “finfighter” at Hair Loss Talk:

"DHT is the most potent male androgen, and it is resposible for pubescenct changes initiation in males. DHT also plays a role in muscle development and sexual function, the lack of DHT in some men leeds to an increase in Estrogen, DHT is an Estrogen Antagonist in males.

Finasteride doesn’t just suppress DHT. Finasteride hinders the Isoenzyme 5 Alpha Reductase 2 (5AR2). 5AR2 is the enzyme responsible for the conversion of Testosterone into Dihydrotestosterone, by hindering 5AR2 Finasteride decreases DHT conversion, the decrease in DHT conversion sometimes leaves an excess of available free ranging Testosterone, this extra Testosterone is often converted into Estrogen when DHT is hindered, this is the reason why some men experience side effects from Finasteride which are associated with to much Estrogen such as Gynecomastia, and erectile dysfunction.

What is even more troubling than Finasteride’s suppresion of DHT is its suppression of 5AR2. 5AR2 is used for more functions than merely T to DHT conversion. 5AR2 is the enzyme which converts Progesterone and deoxycorticosterone into dihydroprogesterone and dihydro-deoxycorticosterone. Finasteride also hinders various neuro steroids such as Allopregnanolone which plays a role in the human brain, Allopregnolone is a part of the body’s natural defense against cognitive deficits. There is still a lot we have to learn about Finasterides effects on the human body and brain, Finasteride is a relatively young drug. See attached photos and literature

5AR2 is also found in the human spinal cord."

Fin inhibits both types of 5 Alpha reductase

saw palmetto for example, and many of the natural dht blockers do not, they only inhibit one type, forgot which one

what you DONT Want to do is reduce serum blood levels of DHT
Fin does this, Saw Palmetto has been shown not to do this

I think this is why the side effects with Fin

one guy(supposedly) got man boobs ( I heard one guy complain) on naturals
Whether this is true? probably
However who knows what other kinds of drugs he was taking that might have had a reaction , personally i do not take any prescription hair loss medication (fin rogaine etc)

Not sure if he was a C cup, or DD, but I know he did come to the board and whine. Perhaps he was a fake nick of “the natural”

what would you rather have>

  1. man boobs
  2. cant get it up

I rather have man boobs (never happened to me)

cant get it up? nope never happened
In fact many on the naturals (myself included) report INCREASED LIBIDO

This coming from a guy who resorts to taking blood thinners thinking they will regrow his hair. Its understandable he is bitter against natural DHT blockers since he himself admitted they failed to stop his rapidly balding scalp from getting worse and worse. Finally out of desperation he is putting curry powder and taking other blood thinner type medication hoping he can at least save SOME hair

google curcumin and resveratrol (blood thinners) and the dangers they pose and the EXTREME CAUTION you must use especially those with heart of medical issues, which The Natural fails to mention

I for one suffered the complications from Propecia firsthand, and I’m quite surprised that Propecia only lists “2%” of men suffering from it. The effects are quite drastic and it happened a few months after starting the pill. Lowering the pill to 5x a week still doesn’t stop the effects, but it makes things slightly more tolerable while still trying to save hair.

why would it surprise you that the company would understate the percentage of people with side effects (bad reaction) to their medicine?

And as has been reported by numerous posters at Regrowth, Immortalhair’s forum, Hairlossfight.com., hair loss help.com, hair loss talk. com, natural “DHT blockers” like beta sitosterol can have the same effect as some of these drugs.

By all means, go around to the different forums, and poll the members there:

  1. Which is safer, curcumin and resveratrol OR beta sitosterol (which I see that you have conspicuously taken out of your present regimen - LOL!)

  2. Which is more effective for hair loss: turmeric, resveratrol, vitamin C, D3, K, magnesium, and kelp VS. saw palmetto, beta sitosterol, and pygeum.

But HanginInThere is actively trying to “block” DHT via supplementation, it’s no wonder that people on his regimen developed boobies, loss their sexual appetite, etc. It’s no wonder that he now does not include beta sitosterol in his regimen. Saw palmetto and pygeum might do something for an ENLARGED prostrate, but not much, if anything for your bald crown, especially at your age.

Now, back to finasteride:

"Finasteride doesn’t just suppress DHT.

What this drug does to rats:

Endocrinology. 1995 Apr;136(4):1495-501.

Dihydrotestosterone is the active androgen in the maintenance of nitric oxide-mediated penile erection in the rat. Lugg JA, Rajfer J, González-Cadavid NF.

Department of Surgery, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Torrance 90509.

Abstract ‘‘Androgens are essential for the expression of normal libido in the male, but their role in the maintenance of the erectile response in humans is controversial. It has been shown previously in the rat that castration induces 1) loss of penile reflexes; and 2) considerable reduction in the erectile response to electric field stimulation (EFS) of the cavernosal nerve. Both of these effects can be reversed by testosterone replacement. The current study was performed to determine whether these testosterone effects are mediated via its conversion to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and to what extent the synthesis of the mediator of penile erection, nitric oxide, is affected by castration and androgen replacement. Five-month-old rats were either castrated or left intact. The orchiectomized rats were implanted with SILASTIC brand silicon tubing (Dow Corning) containing testosterone or DHT with or without daily injections of the 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor finasteride. After 7 days, rats were submitted to EFS and the intracavernosal pressure was recorded. Castration reduced the EFS-induced erectile response by 50% in comparison with intact rats and testosterone restored this decrease to normal. When finasteride was given to these testosterone-treated castrate rats, erectile response was not restored. DHT was as effective as testosterone in restoring response to EFS in castrates and this effect was not decreased by finasteride. Nitric oxide synthase activity in the penile cytosol was measured by the arginine-citrulline conversion and was found to correlate with the EFS determinations. These results show that DHT is the active androgen in the prevention of erectile failure seen in castrated rats, and suggest that this effect may be mediated, at least partially, by changes in nitric oxide synthase levels in the penis.’’

My current regimen is not that much really
I have been pretty much on NOTHING since 2008 more by the reason of lack of access here in manila than anything else

Beta sis I never pushed, I did 90 percent of my progress way before I ever started on Beta sis

I POOH POOH beta sis as way too powerful when people ask about it
I guess you clinging to Beta sis as something to bash is your last desperate gasp for breath LOLOL

:stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

My most effective regimen is pyeum nettles and Saw palmetto as DHT blockers

people on naturals DO not by in large suffer reduced libido, poll people taking it, I am sure your poll will be unbiased

Most of the people posting on the board about libido on naturals say they experienced INCREASED libido…:stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Loss of libido is mostly propecia dummies

By the way do you have ANY hair left? I heard you are NW 14:-P :stuck_out_tongue:

Shame a guy in his 40s trying as long as you have, resorting to eating lots of Indian food to save his hair, cant regrow even one hair

you keep bringing up Beta sis, beta sis I have never pushed, its 3000 times more powerful as Saw Palmetto. Whenever you talk about complaints about Side effects you always talk about Beta sis beta sis. Beta sis is not necessary as a natural DHT Blocker. It causes itchiness and oily scalp it is way too powerful

Nettles Pygeum and Saw Palmetto are much more effective for me, Beta sis is overkill.

But you keep clinging to Beta Sis. as your main opponent
btw side effects on natural dht blockers go google side effects (sexual) with Saw Palmetto

You wont find any

Hey guys…I know this was discussed somewhere before but I couldn’t find it, so I figure I’ll hopefully get some fresh posts. I wanted to see if anybody was having these same problems as I am and what you’re doing about it. I’ve come to the realization that my body responds pretty intensely and faster than most people to anything I put in it. I quit propecia after just 5 months because of all the bad side effects I got (loss of sex drive, testicular pain, and I was also exhausted all the time). Since then, I replaced the propecia with saw palmetto and the only other internals I’ve been taking are some other vitamins. Problem is, now, saw palmetto is giving me those same exact sides.

Do I just have to abandon the internal route and only stick to topicals? Or does anyone have another alternative for an internal dht inhibitor? Thank you for your help!

I am on SP for 3 months. No issues, and it hasn’t stopped shedding too. I am a diffuse thinner, and not sure if SP is a good for that.

Hi guys,

I started using saw palmetto extract 320 mg from 2 weeks now one pill per day,
with max-hair vitamins twice daily.

But I Suspect that I have sexual side effects from SP.My erection is very well all the time but I notice less semen than before.

I’m just 25 years old.

Is this normal ?
And why ?

Note: I’m not currently sleep well less than 6 hours daily.

I was on GNC SP for a month and I had TERRIBLE sides. If I didn’t stop as soon as I did I would have ended up like that.

Thank fully I had a 100% recovery within weeks and have been fine.

Some are okay with it, while it’s poison to others like me.

Be VERY careful with this stuff !

I am the guy on http://www.hair loss help.com … adid=88124
yes I am still suffering and living as a handicaped person. My career has ruined completely. I had dreams to move in my field ( was a Cisco Engineer) but due to braing fog, poor memory, artheritis etc and no energy I can not do any thing. Totally 180 degree changed. Anyway consider yourself lucky and throw the junk in the garbage. Whoever introduced this junk had no moral values, no regard to human health. thousand must have ruined their lives but there is no survey or awarness so they are just suffering in the dark.I have recieved donzens of emails from young boys who suffered very badly. I wish someone, just someone has cautioned me 18 months back. I am just trying to help people and I don’t want anything in return. if someone is saved because of me this will be a great reward. People talk about ciggerrette or alcohol effects but these effects are nothing. you stop them and you are on your way in you life but these effects are nasty (I would say if not permanent but last for years and years)

How does he know SP is giving him those sides? its probabaly lingering sides from the propecia

next question

bunch of whining crybabies much like you, who are delusional and imagine things that are not there

much like you imagine your regimen is wrking :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

One guy gets sides from Saw Palmetto, and the other guy gets no results from this herb. Just shows how worthless this herb is, and why someone like you includes in his regimen.

Saw Palmetto is worthless.
