The best herb for our hair: Curcumin

Although unfortunately it inhibits the Wnt3a - B-catenin pathway which is critical in hair growth.

moximus,

That is interesting. By all means, please elaborate on what you have read, found, or studied about this.

Gefitinib is what Folica is using to stimulate Wnt signaling after injury. Interesting!

If you drop me an email at ryanmoxsom @ hotmail.com (no spaces) I can send you the book in pdf format.

Another majro problem with the anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin, ECGC, reversatol, etc. is that they all inhibit angiogenesis which is very necessary for normal hair growth. (Angiogenesis is valscularization of the cells, allowing blood to get to hair dermal papilla).

I do know there are lots of pros to this substance but you should also beware of the few flaws it has as well. I’m sure taking a vasodilator with them would help.

Thank you for contributing this information. It’s all very fascinating, while at the same time confusing.

On one hand, angiogenesis is necessary for hair growth. On the other hand, I have read that angiogenesis is associated with obesity, and that its suppression helps to reduce overall body fat.

I do believe, as you stated, there are pluses (+) and minuses (-). But after doing the math, I feel that my experience with curcumin, resveratrol, and the like has been a very positive one. Still, I can’t help but to wonder about the exact mechanism by which these herbs stopped my dandruff, itching, and thinning.

Angiogenesis is bad alot of parts of the body and is a major player in tumor growth (tumors need alot of blood supply), although when it comes to the hair follicle angiogenesis is necessary and studies have shown lack of vacularization to the dermal papilla leads to hair loss.

The anti-inflammatory properties and anti-oxidant properties are very engouraging for hair growth though.

moximus, I asked a friend at another forum about this, and he responded similarly:

"The Natural - At one time or another, at least on regrowth forum there was a lot of mention of VEGF, angiogenesis as being something desired.

Yet it can be a very negative thing, not just with obesity but with MMP-9. Several pro-hair substances as mentioned inhibit angiogenesis. I’ve always seen this as a good thing because in hormone based tumors are often MMP-9 dependent for increased vascular endothelial growth factor/angiogenesis, which is what tumors utilize to get more blood to expand their growth.

Just about anything against cancer seems to be pro-hair. When I think of angiogenesis I think of upregulation of MMP-9 supplying an growing tumor and that attack this Gelatinase B enzyme has on hair.

What about Wnt3a? Curcumin can suppress the cell adhesion forces in various active cancers that are associated with Wnt3a/beta-catenin response. Fortunately this does not mean anything negative for hair.

This particular pathway is very complicated and there are several effectors that would needed for this stand in the way of altering hair cycles associated with these proteins."

And yet, having stated many of its wonders, one study suggests that curcumin must be combined with resveratrol before it will affect hair growth:

"…As far as the action on hair is concerned, it is unquestionably due to the administration of the two combined active elements, since in the compound with just resveratrol no result has been shown and in the many cases in India and in Europe where Curcumin has been employed, any effect on hair has never been reported. The most important aspect rarely highlighted is that curcuminoids are capsaicinoid substances.

Those fibers, whose nerve cell is in the posterior roots, once stimulated release neuropeptides like the P substance, Neurokinin A and the Calcitonin Gene Related Peptide (CGRP). Experimental researches demonstrated that the desensibilization of those fibers leads to skin lesions localized in the cervical region of the rat. These experiments indicate the existence of a tropic function. It is probable that the loss of hair is a result of the deficit of neuropeptides released by the fibers that innervate the scalp.

Therefore it is possible that the administration of a substance that has as activity similar to capsaicin, as the Curcumin that metabolizes like an active curcumoid, can stimulate the sensorial fibers that have a tropic function, and that resveratrol has a vehicular function on the tissues. Therefore, the composition of the present invention is active on cases of hormone-insensible prostate carcinoma but in particular on hair, as our research has proven. The efficacy of the composition according to the present invention also depends on the great lyophilic properties of a capsaicinoid, curcumin on the anti-inflammatory effect of the two substances.

The interference of the hormonal action on hair loss is unquestionable, even if capsaicinoid-sensible sensory innervations are an ancestral phenomenon that does not depend on the hormonal mechanisms, but through a metabolic way different from the ordinary one. The growth and the pigmentation of the hair follicle seem to be controlled by epitelius-mesenchimoneuroechtodermmic interactions not very well known, but with an important role of the P substance on the hair growth in vivo."

The following is a resveratrol forum with a lot of good information and feedback:

Thanks The Natural (and others) for an interesting thread!

So interesting in fact that I’m tempted to try curcumin and resveratrol.

However, a few questions -

  1. What sort of dosages do you guys recommend - I don’t want to buy something only to find out I should be taking ten times what the capsules contain!

  2. I looked at that resveratrol forum and it seemed there was 50% and 99% (and others) concentrations. Which would you recommend?

  3. Maybe you guys can’t help me but maybe a lurker can - any good places to buy these supplements in the UK? I Googled the terms but a lot of the places I found weren’t well-known suppliers and were pricey. Besides, I didn’t want to commit until I found out what sort of dosages were recommended.

Thanks for your help guys!

Hi dastardly,

With respect to dosages, I would first consider the brand:

"The ConsumerLab which is an independent lab that tests supplements has done testing on various brands of turmeric/curcumin supplements and discovered that some brands werent delivering what they promised. Some didnt have the amount of curcuminoids they claimed and others were contaminated with lead:

'NSI and Solgar exceeded the lead limit. Ageless Cures and Physician Formulas did not have the stated amount of turmeric.

Douglas Labs, Himalaya Pure Herbs, New Chapter, NOW, Physiologics, Pure Encapsulations, Puritan’s Pride, Vitamin Shoppe all were approved by ConsumerLab.com. NOW seemed to have the most curcumin in it.

ConsumerLab tested 13 brands (not including NOW, RevGenetics, among others). Found most complied with stated resveratrol content (and most of this ~98%, was trans-resveratrol, apparently), including Jarrow, Biotiva Transmax, Swanson, PureVinol-25.

Life Extension Foundation 20 mg tabs and Young Again tabs failed- [as they contained] much less [resveratrol than is stated on the their respective bottles].'"

Note: After this test, I do believe that LEF has corrected their problem.

I have tried Jarrow’s products (both their curcumin and resveratrol), and found them to be quite effective at the recommended dosage listed on the bottle (500 mg. of turmeric concentrate X 2; 100 mg. of resveratrol X 2).

At the present, I am trying out LEF’s Super Bio-Curcumin and Country Life’s Resveratrol Plus. Why, you may ask? Because they are a “one a day” capsule. I want to see if I can maintain the same results or get even better results.

Here is a link to a hair loss study: http://tinyurl.com/2gyt8v . And you will notice that participants got results with smaller dosages of curcumin and resveratrol than what I take. As with most things, I guess that it depends on the person.

I continue to buy most of my herbs from iHerb.com. They are very reliable.

Hope this helps,
TN

Thanks a lot for that Natural - I appreciate it!

In fact I’ve just been to iherb and they ship internationally for only 6 bucks, so not a big deal.

Just ordered what you’re using now - one a day suits me better, too.

Thanks again.

I’m getting confused. What is the best resveratrol and curcumin to purchase. Right now I have Jarrow resveratrol 100. and the Life Extension super bio curcumin 400mg. I live in Florida and figure I save at least 40% ordering from iherb as opposed to going to the store.

HH, I believe Jarrow’s curcumin and resveratrol to be good products. I received positive feedback from those taking the one-a-day LEF’s Super Bio curcumin, so I am trying it out. Country Life makes a one-a-day resveratrol plus capsule, which has also received good reviews.

I am using these two right now, because at two capsules a day, it is convenient to do so. And they are, most likely, more powerful than Jarrow’s.

Do you think Now Foods is a good company from iherb to buy these products from?

I have never taken any of the Now brand products, but I know some at another forum who do. Haven’t heard anything negative about their products.

This is more a fun fact than anything, I mean I haven’t had any regrowth yet or anything as far as I can tell. But strange thing, I have a clear thin hair growing an inch above my left eyebrow.
