Minoxidil with proylene glycol

I’ve read somewhere that proylene glycol in minoxidil can harm the grafts. Is this true?

No. Dr. Vera Price did a big study in the year 1999 which was carefully designed to answer a lot of important questions like that. One of the things she did was to use two different placebo groups: one that used a standard kind of placebo solution that had no minoxidil at all, but had plenty of propylene glycol (it was the same vehicle as what’s used with 5% Rogaine, but minus the minoxidil, of course); and a separate group which didn’t apply anything at all to their scalps (called the “no treatment” group).

All the groups, including the two different placebo groups, were tested for 96 weeks (almost two full years). At the end of the study, the two placebo groups had results (hair counts and hair weights) that varied randomly a bit back and forth over the entire time. In other words, the propylene glycol in the group that got the placebo solution with the propylene glycol had essentially the same result as the group that got no topical vehicle at all.

Thank you Bryan.
