What is the maximum number of grafts that can be taken from the head?

I see examples from as few as a couple hundred to as many as four thousand plus. If the donor site is healthy, what is the maximum number of grafts that can be harvested from a donor site without making the site area look strange? In a conservative procedure (say, 1500 grafts), what is the impact to the donor site? Does it end up cosmetically thinner?

have you seen any ht before/after photos? if not go and check. there are so many pics on the web including this forum and there are written how many grafts each patient has got.

It’s different for everyone. Some people have upwards of 10k donor grafts, while others would start to show after 4-5k.

Stupid question.

Worthless answer from a useless poster.

not sure there are any stupid questions if someone is even considering getting an HT

It really does depend on the person, the density of the patients donor area as well as the size. Some peoples safe zone is larger then others.

I have had over 6,000 grafts harvested and my donor area is still very thick. Dr. Armani estimates I can have another large procedure of 3,000+ grafts. But I am just one example.

The average donor area has 16,400 follicular groups. If you elect to have a FUE or CIT procedure, you can take away 50% of your original density and still be left with an acceptable level of coverage.

A much more conservative procedure of 1,500 would be virtually undetectable in the donor region. Technically, your hair would be thinner (since about 10% of the donor density would be extracted) but the difference in the donor region would be practically unnoticeable.

I’m posting a link to a video that shows a patient who had a procedure with 3,000 grafts. It provides some very clear shots of the donor region post-procedure.

Ok I am sorry, but you have to know that you asked such an open ended question, # of grafts available in the donor varies greaty from one person to the next, a norwood 1 will probably have 10 times more donor than a norwood 6, so how can anyone answer your question without knowing more details.

Dear fckhrls,
The total number of hair grafts that can be extracted from the safe donor area will depend on the following things

  1. Race (Oriental and negroid people have less number of FU grafts/sq cm compared to the blond Caucasians who have almost twice the number of grafts)

  2. Scalp donor area laxity (in case a strip procedure is planned).

  3. The initial fu density in the scalp donor area (if the scalp donor density is very low even a 20% extraction may lead to visible problems, especially with fue).

  4. The hair and scalp donor skin color contrast (the more the contrast the less the number of grafts that can be extracted before visible thinning becomes obvious).

  5. The scalp donor hair curl (it has different implications in different area of scalp donor).

Nevertheless, the scalp donor hair fu grafts that can be extracted will vary between as low as 2500 to as high as 9000 to 10000. Both extremes are rare.

Most patients would average somewhere in the middle of this range.

Nevertheless, the most important aspect of donor estimation that is often overlooked would be the patient’s race.

Regards,
Dr. A

fckhrlss is not that bright

its like asking
how much corn can i get on my farm?

well depends on how many acres you have and how you take care of the crop, how thickly or densely you plant the corn etc etc

You want the max number of grafts? The only way is to do strip first, and then follow with FUE or body hair, that’s the only way to max out your donor! I dare anyone to challenge this.
