VPA for grey hair

If grey hair is cause by a wnt signalling problem, a lack of wnt activation

Then could we use the drugs that increase wnt signalling to treat it such as VPA?

Total blue sky theory, but anyone got any reason why/why not?

OK, it turns out things are not as simple as this. According to the actual study

forced activation of the wnt signalling pathway leads to premature differentiation of the Melanocyte stem cells, leading to eventual loss of their self renewing capacity.

Also, of course, lack of wnt signalling means Melanocyte stem cells do not undergo differentiation.

These results then beg the question what is the cause of loss of Melanocyte cells in the follicle in humans? Too much or too little wnt signalling?

If it’s caused by too little, then VPA and any other methods of activating wnt could be useful, and pigment could be restored to hair that is currently grey.
If it’s too much wnt singalling then it could be inhibited by wnt signalling inhibition, but stem cells that are dead are dead. The only way to replace these would be some kind of stem cell therapy.

Another complication is the use of wnt signalling activation by drugs being used for hair loss. Will these drugs cause premature differentiation of Melanocytes and hence cause grey hair?

Minox is known to activate the beta-catenin pathway (the downstream effect of wnt signalling) so does this mean it could cause grey hair?

The answers to these questions depend on what is wrong with the wnt signalling pathway to begin with. I’m trying to find out what this is a the moment, but I suspect that mutations in the wnt pathway could cause both problems.

Not sure why you posted this. It’s just about testing for the drugs in hair and what effect the colour of the hair has on that(like if dark hair shows a higher concentration than blonde)
