My Story - The Beginning to Alvi Armani

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to create a thread dedicated to my own personal experiences & basically to cover everything that has happened since I began noticing my hair loss.

With regards to the photos from Procedure 1 - I lost all of the pics I took between day 1 & month 5 when my hard drive crashed a few years ago.
The photo’s I have posted on here have been taken of me in various locations, nightclubs, outside, indoors etc…
For obvious reasons I never specifically asked anyone to take an overhead shot of me & I rarely took any myself because my 1st transplant was to specifically restore my hairline…

Overhead shots will come in the next few months now that I have had zones 2 & 3 worked on after my 2nd procedure this week.

Im apolgize if anyone isnt 100% happy with any of the photo’s at all due to lighting or any other reasons to doubt photos… They are 100% genuine of me, they have been picked out from my collection, I have tried to pick a selection from different angles & please note that none of the shots have any concealers like toppik or anything like that in them… However most of the shots I have hair gel in my hair.

In the Beginning

I first noticed it at 17 years old, seeing the thinning horseshoe pattern in the mirror was just so destroying for my confidence & I really began to worry about my hair.
My dad has always had a full head of hair & he still does to this day - I spoke with my mum about my early findings & she just said ohh no you will be fine because your dad isn’t bald…

Well as time went on, my hair loss gradually got worse & worse & by the age of 21 it took over my life… I was so paranoid about it that I had to wear a baseball cap in public because I hated my hair…
When I didn’t wear the cap due to a funeral or other event which I had to dress smartly for, I had people commenting on how my hair was thinning & that I would need to be wearing a wig soon…
Comments like that just ripped me apart inside…

Shaving my hair & procerin

In the summer of 2003 I went on holiday & shaved my head to see how I looked… I absolutely hated it… Horrible receding hairline & the horse-shoe shape of hair loss so obvious…

I began looking for things which could help with hair loss… to be honest at this point I did not dig deep enough with forums such as this one & basically the first thing I came across was a product called Procerin which I tried for 6 months but it did nothing at all…

Advanced Hair Studio (Mistake No1)

I then noticed an advertisement on TV by a company called The Advanced Hair Studio… They were using a few UK minor celebrities to advertise how their clinic could re-grow hair etc…
I booked myself in for an appointment with the Bristol Clinic & I had a meeting with the manager there… He told me I had hair loss (no kidding) & that his recommendation for me was their advanced laser therapy…
Now this “laser therapy” worked by applying a “special solution” to the scalp area twice per day & then attending the clinic once every 2 weeks to sit under a laser machine which “stimulated the special solution into re-growing hair”
The cost of which was £3,000… I paid a deposit of £1,500 to begin the treatment & get a 6 month supply of the “special solution”
I went to the clinic a few times & sat under the laser, using the solution twice per day as instructed etc.
It was then the summer of 2004 & I decided to go away to Ibiza for 2 months… It was out in Ibiza that I started reading forums & did a bit of research on the Advanced Hair Studio & I realised that I had been absolutely screwed…
The moment I realised I had basically paid £1,500 for 6 months worth of Rogaine, it felt like I had walked into a customs room, where I was met with a rather large male who was applying the rubber gloves to his hands…:frowning:

So… £1,500 down the drain… I managed to call them up & blag off that I had gone bankrupt & couldn’t afford to pay the rest of the contracted fee & that I would not be returning to them because of lack of funds…
To this day I have not heard from them…

Early hair transplant research

I then began reading the forums; I became aware that currently the only proven way to restore natural hair to the head was to have a hair transplant procedure…
At this point I was still using Rogaine & I had also started propecia in an attempt for my crown area to improve…

My activity looking at the hair transplant doctors was pretty much limited to their own websites… I did not know about any forums at this time… I looked at all of the sites of the big names through Google etc…
Now at this point all I am basing things on were before & after pics advertised on the website…
I looked at Hasson & Wong, Cole, Shapiro & others but the one that stood out for me like a sore thumb was Alvi Armani… His hairline restoration work & density that he was achieving just looked far better than anything else I had ever seen.
The results on his website were just mindblowing… Especially 1 result in particular which just blew my mind & made me decide that Dr Armani was the person to go with without a shadow of a doubt:

http://www.alviarmanihairtransplant.com/p4.html

I later met this guy (Jeff) & became friends with him & to this day his result still blows me away…

The Norton Clinic (Mistake No2)

Now, with all my feelings so strong towards having a procedure with Alvi Armani, I made a HUGE MISTAKE & I look back & put this down to being desperate, young & naive…
I began to think to myself… hold on a minute… surely a hair transplant procedure is the same no matter which doctor performs it…
I then kept thinking this in my mind… why pay all the costs to travel to Canada when I can get one done in the UK…

I contacted a company advertised on Google links called the Norton Clinic who were based in the north of the UK… I spoke with the manager there who asked me to send some photos in… I sent them in as requested & he called me straight back & said “I have seen your pics, our surgeon feels he can do a very good job with you & if you want to get the ball rolling then we have a few dates next month - the price will be £2,000”

Now hearing that & after being quoted almost 4 times that by Alvi Armani at the time - I felt on top of the world & I made arrangements to go to the Norton Clinic & have a procedure there.
I arrived on the day & was so excited… I met the surgeon & his assistant. A husband & wife team who I was told by the manager that they had been in the business for 12 years…
I met the surgeon around lunchtime & he used a pen to show me how much he was going to lower my hairline by… He said 350 grafts would be plenty to cover it… Although I wanted my hairline lowered more, the surgeon sounded genuine in what he was saying with the grafts & placement, that I went ahead with it all.

The surgery began & last for about 5 hours… It was a FUSS procedure & it lasted about 5 hours… I stayed in a hotel that night & then traveled back in the morning to my home…
Now I waited for the growth to occur for a few months & nothing… It looked like about 50 hairs in my hairline & at this point I again started to think to myself… What has gone wrong?

I began reading on forums & stated to see people showing results stating they had 3000+ grafts etc etc…
I then realised that I had wasted another £2,000 for something that was never going to achieve my goals with only 350 grafts…
At this point I felt so stupid… I had steam-rolled myself into almost everything that I was “under the impression” would fix my problems… Advanced Hair Studio had cost me £1,500… Norton Clinic had cost me £2,000… with travel costs & medications etc… I had already invested £5,000 & for no improvement…

Alvi Armani Pre Surgery 1

In January of 2005 the penny finally dropped & I realised that if I wanted the results similar to these guys on the Alvi Armani website - then I would simply just have to travel to Canada & have the procedure done by him.
I called the company & left a message as it was a weekend… within 2 hours of the message, I had Dr Armani personally call me back on my mobile to chat with me about things… We spoke for over 1hr at his costs & he then advised me to send photo’s to him & he would get back to me with his views…

I sent the photos & I also had made contact with Shane at this point& sent, we had e-mail communication going with each other & Dr Armani for my goals etc…
Dr Armani informed me that due to my hair loss I would be committing myself to future procedures if I had the 1st one & that I must maintain using Rogaine & propecia for best results etc…

I was very happy with the pre surgery discussions, it was made very clear to me that the 1st procedure was not just going to be an instant fix for my hair & I did accept that my hair loss was bad at a young age & that future procedures were going to be likely…
Because my hair loss was the only issue in my life which was causing me so much misery & confidence issues, I was prepared from the start to do whatever it took in my life to solve the problem.
Dr Armani said that most patients have donor area of around 10,000 grafts & that it was possible to get a nice coverage of a NW7 with this amount of grafts…
& every time I looked on the website & saw new results on there, it made me much more excited to think that I could finally get the one thing that was massively dragging me down in life fixed…
I paid the deposit to have my procedure in May of 2005…

I found out in March of that year that Dr Armani himself was holding a seminar in London, I made sure that I attended as I wanted to meet with Dr Armani in person a few weeks before my procedure…
We spoke for over 1hr & he again re-iterated with me that he wanted to re-construct my hairline & zone1 with the first procedure, see how things were in a few years & with an aim to working on zones 2 & 3 if my hair loss got worse. Then finally the crown area if I did not respond very well to propecia & Rogaine.

He told me that because I was young & had significant hair loss already, it would be very likely that I would need future procedures & that I needed to know this before committing to the 1st one.
My words to him were “I will use every graft possible to get what I want & I trust in you because your results have been outstanding”

Alvi Armani FUSS 3450 Grafts May 2005

I arrived in Toronto the night before my surgery & was staying in the Westin Harbour hotel which is literally just across the road from the clinic.
I met with Shane & he took my before photos, I then met with Dr Armani again & he told me to have a good breakfast in the morning & then he would begin surgery at 8am.

Here are my before pics:

I arrived for surgery & once I had the anesthetic & local freezing, the procedure was painless… I had paid for 3000 grafts but Dr Armani informed me they managed to harvest 3450 grafts from my strip…
Dr Armani re-created my hairline using approx 2,000 grafts & then remaining 1,450 were placed behind the hairline in zone 2.
I felt very sleepy after surgery & I was walked to my hotel room by Miguel who made sure I had some food for the evening & that I understood to sleep in the chair or at a 45 degree angle etc.
The first night was very uncomfortable… My donor area where the strip was removed from felt very tight & sore & I really struggled to sleep that night -even with the medication I had been given by Dr Armani.

I attended the clinic the next morning & Miguel instructed me how to do the washing & cleaning of the transplanted area & said that if I wanted to come back for a few days he would do it for me being as I was staying so close by.

The next few days the swelling occurred which was weird to look at but completely painless… I still had quite a tight sensation in my donor area tho for a few days.
I did not do anything for 4 days other than play online poker using my laptop & watch DVD’s… I carried out the post operative instructions exactly how they were described to me.

I stayed in Toronto for almost 2 weeks… After the 1st week the swelling had gone down & I wore a very loose fitting baseball cap on my head, always ensuring not to touch the grafts at all etc…
I visited the CN Tower & Niagara Falls… I even had an 18hr poker session at the local casino there lol!!
I had my staples removed on the day I flew home… The removal was painless & I could see my scar for the 1st time.
The scar didn’t bother me that much at that time because the whole idea was to have hair, therefore not to have it shaved down so the scar was visible etc…

I returned home in early June & after following the post op instructions for the first month I began to take a light shower…
The grafts began to fall out but I noticed that not all of them did… I had a few that stayed in…

Post Operation - The Waiting Game

The next few months are known as “the waiting game” it’s not nice to be honest… The anxiety of waiting for it to grow through - always questioning yourself whether or not it will turn out ok etc etc…
I must have called Shane & Dr Armani 4 or 5 times in the first few months & they both re-assured me that everything was normal & it would take a bit longer to start to come through…

Well, just as promised I started to see the hairs popping through & at first they were very thin, however I could see my hairline design looked really good & I had high hopes…

At month 6 the growth was unreal… I had really responded very well & I was able to style my hair how I wanted it finally…
I felt so much better, my confidence was massively restored… I ditched the baseball caps & felt great when I looked in the mirror…

Here are my month 6-8 Pics:

I met some amazing girls in that time & wouldn’t have dreamed of getting anywhere with them before my procedure… my confidence was so low that I just assumed they wouldn’t be interested in me because my hair was horrible… I always had that feeling because when I did speak with people (male & female) their eyes always looked up at my hair areas… (I now realise that theory was about girls was all in my head lol)

So I got to 1 year out & felt just so happy… I felt as if Dr Armani & his procedure on me had literally changed me life… I told a few people about it, no1 knew anything at all because I was always wearing baseball caps before my procedure… so when I showed them the before & after pics they were just blown away…
I posted my results on a few forums & had people commenting that my results were the best they had ever seen - to hear things like that was crazy for me… I did always deny it & say that Jeff’s (who had inspired me the most) was the best tho!

Years 1-4 Much Happiness but (Mistake 3) with proscar & Rogaine

I regularly posted on forums with my results & my experiences etc, I enjoyed my life so much more now that I had a great hairline & could style my hair the way I wanted it etc…
The one mistake I did make & this is something I must stress to people & feel very strong about…
I was using Rogaine twice per day for about 1yr after my procedure, also Proscar 1/4 tablet per day…
In my after photos you will see a definite improvement in areas that were not part of the original transplant i.e. behind the hairline & zone 2… This must only be due to the use of the medication I has been pretty religious with since my procedure…

2006 Pics:

Here are my full 18 month pics - I took these under bathroom lighting.

About 2 years after my procedure in mid 2007… I had a bad time in my life with a relationship & my job & also family issues…
I got very lazy with re-ordering myself proscar & also using the Rogaine twice per day, I think I actually stopped using both for a period of 5 months before getting back on them… but even then I wasn’t using both each day etc etc…
The hairline was still as amazing as ever tho!!

2007 Pics:

I began noticing a difference in early 2008 with my hair, the crown was thinning again & zones 2 & 3 were not as thick as the 1st few years after my 1st procedure…
My hairline still looked amazing & I then made sure I got myself back on the Rogaine & proscar again… after 6 months of good solid use, the results were looking better again… But then I became lazy again once it began to look good etc… Ended up using Rogaine once every few days & didn’t even bother with proscar…
Since pretty much 2007 I have just been lazy & on off with both products… resulting in constant changes in the appearance of my hair in the non transplanted areas…

What I am getting at here is I definitely feel I respond well to these products… I have been stupid & frequently lazy to not have just constantly used them from the start… I now realise that these need to be taken consistently for the best results & the theory of losing what you re-grow with them REALLY is true!!

2008 Pics:

2009 Alvi Armani Pre Surgery 2

Early 2009 Pics (Styled) Hairline still looks great.

During the middle of this year I felt as if it would be a good idea to go in for my 2nd procedure at the end of the yr to have zones 2 & 3 worked on.
I knew that Dr Armani exclusively specialised in FUE only now, so the only thing that was a concern to me was that the price was more expensive than my previous FUSS procedure… Obviously the good thing was no scar this time round…
I had also heard from a few people that the differences in FUE & FUSS with regards to healing, & in particular the donor area, were very noticeable & that FUE was like a walk in the park compared to FUSS…

My main reasoning for going for my 2nd procedure this year was based on a set on photo’s I took which clearly showed alot of thinning in zones 2, 3 & the crown was looking thin as well…
These photo’s could be a great justification of what happens when you stop using proscar & rogaine for an extended period of time & I also had a really bad itchy scalp for a month or so which I feel contributed to a loss of hair…

You can see a massive difference in just a short space of time from how I looked in the previous few years…
Its hard to say what caused such a difference, whether it be rogaine & proscar discontinuation, the itchy scalp, natural loss or just a shedding??
What must be remembered tho are my before photos of my 1st procedure… you can clearly see the hairloss in all the areas so that needs to be beared in mind also etc - I just feel that I must have responded well to some of the drugs to have gotten a great look in the other areas from the time after my 1st until the these pics were taken etc.

The 2009 Pics prompting me to have procedure 2: No styling, hair just dried after a shower (the hairline still looks great tho!):

I contacted Dr Armani in September & informed him that I wanted to come back over & have zones 2 & 3 worked on… he asked me for recent pics & I sent the ones above to him… He said that the plan all along was to do them if they had got worse & that now would be a good time to have the work done.

I made contact with Eric & I told him that my finances were a bit tight but I wanted to have it done… I made myself available for any cancellation dates that came up in Nov & Dec in the hope I could get the procedure a bit cheaper… I’m fortunate enough to have a flexible job so a cancellation date was the best option for for me.

Eric called me a few weeks ago to state that the 2nd of December was available as someone had cancelled & did I want it… I had the funds to cover the costs & my trip so I decided to go for it…

Alvi Armani 2nd procedure 2027 Grafts FUE

I arrived in Toronto on Tuesday 1st December & because I arrived after the clinic was closed it was arranged I could have my before photos done in the morning of my procedure…

The day of my 2nd procedure arrived… I spoke with Dr Armani in the morning & we sat down with my photos in his office, I told him I was very happy with my hairline still & we both agreed that what was left in zone 2 was pretty much the hair he has transplanted there from my 1st procedure…
The goal for my 2nd procedure was therefore to re-enforce the hairline by working exclusively in zones 2 & 3 & aiming for as much density as possible with nice coverage.
He also felt my donor area was very strong & I had at least another 6,000 grafts to use in future after the 2,000 he was extracting today.

Before photos taken by myself prior to 2nd procedure in hotel:

Before photos prior to 2nd procedure (Taken by Alvi Armani):

The Procedure:

WOW… Is all I can say… When people say that FUE is much less painful & easier to extract than FUSS in terms of the donor area… they aint kidding!!!

The procedure started at 9am, the local freezing was done in the donor area, as always it’s the part you feel the most sensation with… once that had kicked in then the rest was totally painless…
The extraction of 2052 grafts took approx 2hours… I voluntarily donated 25 grafts to Dr Armani’s research - Yes I know I have paid a lot of money for the procedures but at the end of the day, it’s the least I can to help the person who had such a positive impact on my life.
I will get a compensation of Originere products for the donation of grafts as well so it’s all good!

Right back on track with the procedure… Once the grafts were extracted & placed into trays of singles, doubles & treble hairs… I had a drink & some biscuits & then Dr Armani made the incisions in zones 2 & 3. That took approximately 1hr to do & then I had lunch before his team transplanted the grafts.

The transplantation process took 2 hours in total & at 3pm I was all finished… I felt so much different compared to my FUSS procedure… I felt perfectly fine… I had no pain in any areas & I felt so good I did not need anyone to come back to my hotel room with me - whereas with FUSS I did.

I met with Dr Armani before leaving & he has a look at my grafts & said it looked very nice, he went through the procedure with me again for the 1st night & how to sleep & medications etc & I then left the clinic.

I slept so much better that night when compared to my FUSS procedure 4 years ago!! There was no tight feeling in my donor area & literally no pain or sensations whatsoever.

I arrived back to see Dr Armani the next day & he said everything looked nice & that one of his team would clean me up & show me the procedure again for cleaning the grafted area…
It was pretty much the same as before except the use of a cream for the donor area & no longer the need to use vitamin E oil for 3 weeks.

I was given all my medication & cleaning products for both the donor area & grafted areas & I left the clinic after thanking all those that performed my procedure the previous day.

Day 1 Photos (Taken by Alvi Armani):

Post Op Day 1-6

With no pain in my donor area, I felt really good on Day 1 & I just braced myself for the swelling which was to come in days 2 & 3… With the swelling before, I knew it would look like I had gone 12 with Tyson in his prime but its only just swelling… no pain at all.
I kept to the post op instructions… made sure I cleaned my grafted area twice per day & ensured I did not touch it at all…
The swelling hit my eye level on day 2 & eventually disappeared full at the end of day 4.
I kept thinking to myself that my donor area just isn’t causing me any sensations or tightness like it did with FUSS… It really made a difference with my sleep & I had absolutely no problems at all with sleeping.

Day 7

I flew home today & spent the time on the plane writing this up. I will continue to update this thread regularly with photos & as much information as possible.

The Future

It definitely holds another procedure for me, I knew all along I was looking at 3 or maybe 4 in total due to my hair loss at such a young age. It is the path that I chose to take & I don’t regret it in anyway whatsoever… Whatever it takes I will commit to when it comes to future procedures.
In my opinion I have had surgery with the best doctor that money can buy & my 2nd procedure was a total no brainer to choose Dr Armani again after the amazing hairline restoration, & how the final result of my 1st procedure with him turned out.

We will see how this one turns out & if I can respond again to the meds (which I will be taking now without any messing around on/off with them etc)
I would really like to get Zone 4 & the side bits that you can see in the pic that are thin all nicely filled in so that would just leave me the crown…
With roughly 6,000+ grafts left, I am very confident that I can complete my journey & enjoy the rest of my days with a really good head of hair.

I hope by sharing my personal experiences over the past 6 years it will be valuable to people who are going through the same things or thinking about hair loss & what to do about it.
I have been as honest as I possibly can, I have held back nothing & I will always answer any questions at all…

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

thats a great hairline. I love Armanis strip work. He had some great results. If he would still perform strip surgeries I wouldnt hesitate one sec. BUT now he is performing subpar FUE surgeries and I had to choose an other surgeon. Thats sad because I dont think I will get a hairline like yours.
Dan just be happy that u got an Armani-Strip-hairline and I hope for you that your FUE result turns out good and not like chanzuhe…

Tequilla,

Dr. Armani performs over 400 FUE procedures a year and is accomplishing very consistent results. We have more FUE cases documented here then any other surgeon. Chanyouzhe was an isolated incident. He took a long flight home and did not work with the clinic as far as following the post op care instructions. We did everything we could to work with him and to ensure he has optimal opportunity for growth, but he has not responded well to our help.

You do not know the details of chanyouzhe’s case.

Please do not take this thread documenting Danuk’s thread of track bringing up other cases.

Hi Tequilla,

I really wanted to keep this thread as a personal journal about MYSELF & my own experiences which can be updated by myself with future results & photos etc…
It took me a long time to write this up & share my photos & already it seems like its going to be de-railed with other people’s situations…

I do not personally know the ins & outs of the case you mentioned & if you do not know them yourself, I personally dont think its fair on me to use his case in my thread which I made about myself. -
I see that Pats has just addressed this issue from his perspective & also information has been given to state reasons of the outcome…

On a personal note from my perspective with regards to the hairlines & Dr Armani’s work:

With regards to the hairline… I have seen many cases on this forum alone who have had hairline re-construction from Dr Armani using FUE & the results are just as good as his strip in my opinoin - Burberry is just one example of this, his is the most recent one that I have seen - to be honest I see so many that look great that I just lose track of who is who etc.

Thanks for sharing your views & thanks for the comments about my hairline but please can we keep this thread about myself & not other people.

Many Thanks

Dan

Pats205 - if Armani performs over 400 FUE procedure a year which is more than 1 procedure every single day (in year we have 365 days) which sounds crazy to me then why do we see (or you usually post) in different forum topics most of time the same people results only? There are only 20-30 different people whom results i have found from internet and who got awesome results. Some of them has got both - strip and fue. You should have a tons of great results to show us especially if you told somewhere in your previous posts that 95% of Armani patients got great results?

Most people do not want their photos used or their identity known. People certainly do not want their photos up on websites and forums.

People are very sensitive on this subject and want to keep it a secret that they had a procedure. It is not a requirement that a patient has to allow us to use their photos. Most decline. I do feel our results are pretty well documented.

It’s easy to blur/cut out the patient face and without saing any other information about this patient (i mean patient name, location) then no one knows who is that guy. it even doesn’t come up in searching engines if you don’t use patients real name. btw… most of baldies care about the results only not the patient identity and they don’t need to see patient whole face and they don’t need to know their names.

Even with face blocked out, we need the patient’s consent to use their photos for internet / marketing purposes, and most are not willing to sign off on that. Even with face blocked.

We do our best though. I do feel like we are documented on here pretty well.

Dan, I have really enjoyed following your story and journey.

Krapok, most people who have HT’s just want to go on with their lives. There are a small number of patients from each clinic who want to share their stories, and be part of a community.I had a great experience with Dr. Armani, and chose to share my story. I had more time, and was more active a couple of years ago.The same can be said for some of the patients from H&W, Feller, and some of the other top clinics. H&W had patients on some forums with thousands of posts who were very active in the past. They don’t post as much any more. Does that mean they are upset with the clinic? No I am pretty sure they are happy, and just want to move on with their lives.

Guys like Danuk, and Burberry should be appreciated for taking the time to docuement and share their experiences.
