I think the final result in Mr. Khan’s case is paticular is very good, considering his extensive areas of hairloss.
He definitly made the right decision by doing combination FUHT+FUSE
» Mr Khan has a family history of advanced hairloss.
Predictably enough, by his early 30s he had reached Norwood 6 level of
» hairloss.
»
» Now, with a combination of FUHT and FUSE (scalp + beard + chest), it is
» possible to cover extensive areas of hairloss.
»
» Mr Khan has decided to go in stages.
»
» He has till now undergone
»
» 4300 FUHT
» 1027 FUSE grafts (619 scalp, 302 beard and 106 chest grafts).
»
» He is scheduled, shortly, for further work.
» Following pictures will showcase his progress.

» what is the point in throwing in beard and chest hair? He can totally
» accomplish this result without using 302 beard and 106 chest grafts,
FUE or BHT is more expensive than strip, by adding beard and chest hair, the doctor can charge more just a guess. I agree whether having the beard and chest hair makes no difference for him, strip alone can do the job alright.

I think V stated that he is going back to have more work done. They must have taken maximum grafts possible by strip and going to have to use FUE and BHT for the next phase.

Dear Ipod,
Most Norwood 6 people will need 10,000 to 15,000 grafts to cover all bald areas.
At Norwood 6, patient’s 25,000 nature given follicular units have succumbed to the effects of MPB.
Strip FUHT alone can not provide the requisite numbers. Use of robust beard and body hair is necessary.
Mr. Khan’s initial beard and bht procedure gives him confidence to rely on that donor resource in addition to the scalp donor.

10,000 FUs!!! the numbers get higher and reality moves closer every year. 10 years ago they would tell us 2000 grafts would do the job. A couple of years ago 5000 should do it. Recently 7000 scalp grafts was all that was necessary. Now it is 10,000. I hope that is the end of it.
By the way Dr. A, we did not see his crown was this covered at all?

» All the best,

It all depends on how dense you want to “cover” the bald area, you can cover the area with a dusting effect and that shouldn’t require a lot of FUs

Dear Marco,
I believe graft estimates should not be based on the doctor’s ability.
The simplest and ideal method is to let the patient know the number of FUs that have succumbed to androgenic alopecia.
With that as the starting point, it becomes easy to understand how many grafts will be required, for a given hair restoration design.
Mr. Khan’s hair restoration will require above 10,000 grafts if he sticks to the plan of covering all areas of hairloss.
No grafts have yet been transplanted to the crown.

Dear neveragain,
Let me explain it mathematically.
When the scalp needing to be covered is >250 sq cms, even a dusting effect will need more grafts then what is possible by strip alone.
Hypothetical graft requirement
100 sq cms in the crown is transplanted at 20 grafts per sq cms = 2000 grafts
100 sq cms frontal and top at 50 grafts per sq cms = 5000 grafts
50 sq cms of hairline at 70 grafts per sq cm = 3500 grafts
Total grafts = 10,500
This will give a thin look in the crown and temple recessions.
