Just Started Generic Avodart (Dutasteride) 2.5mg Daily

» Mj, would you recommend using Nizoral? I think I’ll pick some up today if
» I get the chance.

Definetly!! I use it every other day. I love it.

» So how long before the shedding ended and the regrowth began? Your shed
» lasted for 6 months or so?

hey bro, sorry I didn’t see your post. My shedding was SEVERE and it lasted just over 3 months.

As far as regrowth goes, I really can’t confirm. I do know I have thickening for sure of my existing hairs, but I’m not sure about regrowth. It’s only been 2 months since my shed has stopped. I think within another 2 months we will be able to tell if I have regrowth or not on both my vertex and crown area. I promise to follow up then with honest pics, and my hair will be its own natural black by then too. We can then together assess whether or not I’ve had regrowth or what.

However, if you do look at my pre-op pics on the hair transplant forum there is a photo taken from the top of my scalp. You can see when slightly wet the whole mid section is barely there. I can ASSURE you it’s 2 times as dense to the least right now.

So you’re not sure if you regrew what you lost in the shed? And the shed began about 6 months after you started?

I’m not sure if anyone can experience regrowth worth noticing only 1-2 months after a severe shed of 3 months. If I’m not wrong, there is a short rest phase after a shed that can go from weeks to months. But during this phase you can tell what direction you’re heading by the thickening of your existing hair. My hair I know for absolute sure has become thicker. I think I have some regrwoth but I won’t confrim until I am 100% sure of that. And, for argument sake, lets say I did get regrowth after my shed. That would mean some hairs would have begun for the past 4-8 weeks now. You think they can get long enough to notice that fast? Maybe 3-4 months, but I doubt 1-2 mnths.

Note: Although this is approx 12-13 months update on dut, the difference between the photos is only 10 months.

This is NO minoxidil treatment.

I have been using niz 2% for a few months now.

That looks like a HUGE improvement to me. Your hair is a little longer in the second pic, but still, there seems to be some major gains there.

Thanks bro.

The hair length may be adding to the appearance of more hair, but it looks to me like at least a 35-50% gain in hair count or thickness of hair. Whatever it is, its a huge difference, no question.

I have to admit, if this thread were in any other hair loss forum, it would be 10x as busy with traffic and comments. I find it very sad actually that this log is taken for granted. If you can find anywhere else a log this long for over a year on dut use, please let me know, cause it doesn’t exist.

Thanks to the small number of bros that have participated thus far.

Thank you Mj, for what you’ve done here. It’s nice to know that if someone decides to take dut they’ll know they’re not in it alone & have your documented work. From my experience this alone helped me decide and also to stay on it instead of quiting after the first shed. Thanks again!

Hello,

I was on propecia for about 2 years (2006-08). I started taking Avodart (.05/daily) in early 2009 so, it’s been about a year. I’ve definitely gotten some good results. I also use minox about 2x daily (since about 2001). Glad I stumbled upon this blog. I’ll try to check back and throw in my 2 cents from time to time.

CK

Finally received a few months of supply so now I’m back at 0.5mg daily. Was taking 0.5mg one time per week for the past approx. 3 months because I was running low on supply and I had to improvise.

Lately I have been shedding some, nothing terible, but definetly noticable. Is it due to the decrease in frequency these past few months? I don’t know, maybe. Or maybe it’s another shed. Either way, I’ll be okay. In a few weeks I will post photos of the top of my head and compare them to the ones taken a year ago.

No sides whatsoever.

I’m sure the shed was from the infrequency of the dose. Looking forward to seeing those pics.

» I’ve finally received my batch of generic avodart. On Dec. 4, '08 I
» started Dutasteride 2.5mg daily (5 caps). I had a whole line of treatments
» to take with it including gingko biloba, vitamins, and all sworts of other
» goodies. However, I delayed everything else so that if I get any results,
» good or bad, I would know where they came from.
»
» So far my erections have been super better since the second day. I know
» this for a fact. Don’t notice any other side effects as of yet. I plan on
» taking 2.5mg daily for atleast 2 week and then drop to 0.5mg daily with an
» addition of 2.5mg finasteride. Why? Because 2.5mg of dutasteride have been
» shown in the clinical trials to provide the best effects stopping 98% of
» DHT. However, 2.5mg of dut daily wil burn a whole in your pocket. TOO
» EXPENSIVE. So, being that finasteride and dutasteride share similar
» properties in make-up, taking 2.5mg of fin with 0.5mg of dutasteride will
» save me tons of money and provide better results than 0.5 mg of dut alone.
»
» If side effects are noted then I will drop 2.5mg to 0.5mg+fin. If side
» effects are still noted, then I will drop to just 0.5mg of dut. However, I
» will take into consideration that dut hair growth are usualy shown post 1
» yr mark. Therefore, I will not stop because of shedding or anything else.
»
» Will eventually add to my regime:
»
» Nioxin nightly
» Reg. Shampoo mornings
» 5% minox (nightly only)
» Multi-vitamins
» Biotin
» Saw Pametto
» Gingko Biloba
»
» Will keep everyone posted very frequently.
»
» By the way… I will also be getting a hair transplant with dr Alvi Armani
» (FUE) in March of 2009. And will continue with the above regime
» thereafter.
»
» Feel Free to ask any questions.

-I only shampoo my hair about 3x a week. I alternate shampoos (Nizoral, Nioxin and Kerastase). My theory is if you wash your hair too much you can damage it resulting in breakage. The scalp produces natural oils to help hair grow. Nioxin nightly and Reg. shampoo mornings might be overkill don’t you think???

Hey Cole, every doctor I have spoken to sais the samething you say, and I agree. However, I’ve never come across an ordinary doctor that I don’t wind up schooling on hairloss and on hair itself. They don’t know jacksh*t about hair loss lol. On the contrary, articles I’ve read and hair specialists I’ve spoken to say that although our hair produce all these good stuff, in modern times you still have to shampoo your hair everyday (mild). Doctors will tell you maybe twice a week. Our atmosphere is filled with pollution beyond what the naked eye can see and this all collects in your hair. On top of that, most of us use hair styling products as well; should be washed out with shampoo same day.

So far I’ve been using shampoo nearly everyday for as far back as I can remember, well over 10 years. Nizoral (not nioxin)make hair feel harsh but it’s EXCELLENT for a fuller thicker look, and halting hair loss to a degree. Hence, the reason for using a shampoo. Most people use the shampoo and nizoral in one shower, I separate them. Same difference.

As far as nizoral goes (not nioxin) I try to use it every night but can’t. Sometimes I’m in too much of a rush, sometimes I forget, or I’m just too lazy. I use it atleast 4 times a week though.

But to be frank with you, I’d love to have a healthy full head of hair. but my priority is quantity, not quality.

I hope so cause you’re in for a surprise. I cannot believe the amount of difference there is. Looking back at the photo taken last March of 2009, and looking at my hair now you’d never believe it’s the same head.

I take for granted how far I’ve come. Thanks to the spectacular hair transplant I did with Armani in 2009 in the hair line and temples, the rest is all restored with dutasteride. Things went exactly according to plan. The best thing I’ve done is not stop dutasteride when I was nearly crying from the massive shed over the 3 month period previously.

That’s great! I’m hoping I’ll get the same response, but at 6 months I’m not seeing much difference (if maybe even a little loss). I forget - you’d been on Proscar before you switched? How long were you on Proscar and how did you respond to it?

» The scalp produces natural oils to help hair grow.

Nah, I don’t believe that. I don’t know of any evidence for it.
