Cotasarelis, you are my hope!

Great news indeed hair coach…let the show go on  …ladies your miserable hangin baldies are gonna leave you

At wich PHASE of study they are?

I think that tomorrow the HM could be already a reality, and the question is not who can bring to the market the HM, but when…

"Zohar says Follica has further developed this work and filed additional patents to protect the technology. What’s so beautiful about the approach, she says, is that translating it into a treatment for humans involves only devices and drugs that are already on the market. A doctor would first use a microdermabrasion tool, say, or a laser to remove the top layers of the skin—as is already commonly done in a number of dermatologic and cosmetic procedures—knocking some cells back into a primitive state. The doctor can then use this newly created therapeutic window to inject drugs that push the cells to develop along one pathway or another and grow hair or skin. Zohar won’t reveal what drugs Follica is using, except to say that they are small molecule drugs normally taken orally for purposes with no relation to hair growth.

Because the components of the system are already approved, the regulatory path is pretty straightforward, and Follica can perform human studies without jumping through a lot of governmental hoops. That’s exactly what the company plans to do with the money it has just raised. A proof of concept study involving 15 to 20 patients (Follica has no shortage of volunteers, as several hundred people sent in e-mails when word of Cotsarelis’s work reached the public) should begin in the next few months. The trial has several phases, however, and Zohar cautions that final data won’t be in for at least a year. So don’t pull your hair out waiting for results.

I don’t mean to get under anyone’s skin but I have a quick question. First off, in my case I’m 26 and have been diffuse thinning for the past 6+ years. My temples are fine(in my opinion) probably a nw 1.5/2 but my crown and hairline keep disappearing. My question is this. For the people in the 30-50 range would you say at age 30 would be a good age to get the full head of hair you’ve wanted like you had when you were 16? For me, over the last 3 years my look has completely changed due to these strands of hair that I used to be able to throw gobs of gel into and barely notice any thinning. As of late I started to get healthy again(running, eating right, quit smoking/chewing, etc.) I would have just shaved my head a few years back but I have ears that stick out and it is noticeable and if I shaved my head I would look completely different. I’m hoping by age 30 I can have a full head of hair with a good hairline. I used to get the most gorgeous of girls and as of late I no longer have the confidence that I had up until age 23. So would you all say at age 30 you would be contempt if say HM was to give you a full head of hair? Anyway, there’s lots of research studies and innovative solutions in the work and I hope everyone is keeping their head up and ears open for this world changing procedure. Go HM!!!

I’d say that chances that 4 years from now on you (==average joe) would have full head of hair are nearly zero. Chances that Bruce Willis would have are less than 20%.

I know this is not an answer to the hair thing, but have you thought about getting your ears pinned back? You could then close crop/shave your head without worrying aboaut your ears sticking out. Probably wouldn’t cost much and I don’t think it’s a complicated surgery. Just a thought - until hair multiplication comes around - and then you could wear your hair any way you wanted!

That is fast progress I must say! I did not think so much of this since every new find usually means +10 years away, but if they are using technology and drugs already available it could mean that they are very close. If it works in humans…

I found this new patent from Cotsarelis dated 2007-12-27 for those who like som heavy reading:

http://v3.espacenet.com/textdoc?DB=EPODOC&IDX=WO2007149312&F=0

This patent is the method that Follica.inc will apply, after distruption of the skin with microdermabrasion. GREAT FINDING!

I would really like to know what the poster “James Bond” thinks about this.

First of all, it’s a good news because more research in hairloss means more chance to have a good cure one day.

Second of all, it’s still a very long way to go; think about direction, hair quality, hair cycle. What’s going to happen if you are diffuse thinning, they are going to do wound the skin between hairs???

What did I do wrong?

Seconded, although I would add Benji to the list, as he has been promoting this concept for a while now.

Regarding their progress, they referred to a proof of concept study, to begin in a few months. They also cautioned that final data would not be in for a year. Is this final data for the proof of concept study? I believe it would have to be; I can’t imagine you could conduct a full three-phase trial (even if the technology is already in existence) in the space of nine months.

Therefore, presuming (for the sake of argument) that the study finds the concept viable, how long would a straightforward three phase trial take? Would 2010 be a realistic timeframe? If so, and if some form of hair multiplication (used as a fill-in) becomes available in roughly the same time period, it raises the possibility of using a combined approach to regenerate a head of hair without resorting to a HT. For example, you could use HM to fill in the crown and vertex, and use this technique to reconstruct the hairline, temples and temporal points. Conversely (and if I understand the Follica technique correctly), you could get a traditional HT and then use this new technique to regenerate hair in the donor region.

I am just throwing some ideas out there; hopefully it will generate some intelligent discussion.

Hmm… did you click on “Original document”? Otherwise I dont know why you cant read it. Maybe it is your pdf-reader?
