Dutasteride, Rogaine, Nizoral, Lysine, Biotin, Exercise, L-Arginine

I am going to start a log of my results on the following regime which I am in the process of starting up. But first I have some questions that are asked in the parantheses below:

0.5 Dutasteride daily
Rogaine Foam 2x daily (should I only apply it to the crown and vertex or also to my hairline)?
Nizoral 2% cream (how often do people suggest?)
1g Lysine daily
2,000 mcg Biotin daily
4 g daily MSM
10g of L-Arginine (this is said to stimulate the release of growth hormone, especially in those who exercise)
Multivitamin

Any thoughts?

1st week: No visible results (not that I was expecting any). But there have been changes. It should be noted that during the first week I wasn’t using Rogaine or Nizoral cream (but did use 1% Nizoral shampoo twice) and I started Rogaine last night. Firstly, on Dutas, my libido took a bit of a nosedive. I had sex two days ago with a girlfriend and was able to function for the first go-around, though my desire’s a bit curbed. I think I would have been able to bounce back quicker for a second go were I not taking Dutasteride. There have been some mood shifts and near headaches which I seem to be able to head off by exercise. The BIGGEST change is that my scalp doesn’t itch; this is actually a huge relief. The itchiness of my scalp before was beginning to make me go batty.

NOTE: I won’t post unless there are changes worth noting either in terms of results or physical effects.

Why do you think your scalp was itching so badly?

» Why do you think your scalp was itching so badly?

I can’t be entirely sure, but it was especially focused in areas of recent hair loss. It goes away for a bit when I use Nizoral shampoo. It went away when I exercised more and used the L-Arginine which lowers blood pressure and is reputed to induce the release of HGH. I’ve noticed that there are many reports of itchy scalp by people who are losing their hair. It seems to me there must be a tie between DHT, reduced blood flow, and hair loss. This is speculation, but it would explain the things that I’ve experienced and what so many others have. Certainly, there must be a tie to DHT, given what’s happened with me on Dutas. Also,I’ve seen doctors websites suggest there is no link at all, and that just doesn’t fit the heavy anecdotal evidence I’ve seen to the contrary.

I don’t believe 2mg of biotin is enough. Rather take 5.
10g of arginine? Where the hell do you buy it? How many intakes a day: 2 (x5g)?
You should not risk it with a dut a day. I guess you’re young.

Okay, I’ll up the biotin.

I take the 10 g L-Arginine before I go to bed if I haven’t eaten anything for more than 2 hours. I only do it days when I’ve worked out. I know it’s in dispute, but there is some talk that this causes the body to secrete more growth hormone. My experience is that I look younger, feel healthier, and sleep better when I do this and people commented that I look better; for me, there seems to be something really valid to it. And the first time I tried it, I woke up with absolutely zero scalp itch which made me think something good was going on for my hair; that was dramatic and unexpected. It is said to work only for folks through their mid-40s at latest up to 50. I buy it through a website for supplements (iherb, in my case) and get it in powder form to mix in water. It tastes absolutely gruesome, so one must hold one’s nose.

A Dut a day is dangerous? I assume you mean for libido. Well, desire has been curbed somewhat. But not just for hair, I take L-Tyrosine, Choline, and Fish Oil and these are said to help. And I’ll pop 3 grams of L-Arginine before getting to it. I don’t have problems, unless I have been starving myself. But exercise and these supplements may be key. One thing is clear: libido and performance in that area is as much a brain chemistry issue as what’s going on down below. I think that’s why Tyrosine and Choline help.

I am 43.

What’s the science behind choline and tyrosine, sexwise? Since I’ve been taking 2.5mg Finasteride a day, my libido has been impaired. Less desire, medium to weak erections, morning woods all gone… What would you advise me? How long have you been on dut?
As to arginine, I used to take 2- 4 g a day some years ago along with ornithin and lysin. I found all those completely worthless. Not to mention gastric problems since they should rather be taken on an empty stomach (not 2 but a minimum 3 hours after dinner). Have you ever tried DHEA? Melatonin?

I don’t claim to have all the answers; I just know what works for me. I take L-Tyrosine the first thing upon waking up in the morning on an empty stomach and with water. It helps me keep mental focus and gives me energy, and this is why I was taking it. I noticed it also helped my libido and then I read that it’s thought to have this effect. Just google tyrosine and libido and you’ll find some articles. Don’t take it with food or any other vitamins or amino acids or anything other than water, and be without food for a half hour at least. Don’t take more than 1g a day and don’t take it at night. I’ve read similar things about choline and its effect on libido/performance. I take it daily.

http://www.alternativedr.com/tyrosine1.htm

L-Arginine I use in one of two ways: for the HGH “pump” I told you about above, in 10g quantities taken on an empty stomach (2 hours after eating or drinking anything other than water has worked for me). And I take it about an hour before I anticipate sleeping with a woman. It is supposed to release or make available nitric oxide, a key to the proper functioning of an erection. It seems to work well in 2-3 gram quantities for this purpose for me.

Testosterone is key too especially for having desire, and for enhancing that I will take Tribulus Terrestris for a day or two now and then. It is supposed to enhance testosterone levels.

The final thing for me has just to make sure I don’t sleep with a woman without having eaten recently or reasonably well in a day. This seems funny, but I traced mediocre performance in two cases to the simple fact that I hadn’t recharged my batteries with food. It is also best for me not to eat a bunch right beforehand.

I haven’t tried the things you mentioned for this purpose or needed to do so. From what I know melatonin would have a dampening, not enriching, effect on libido. I have used Levitra as a hedge against deflation more than anything, but I find Arginine which supports the same basic nitric oxide building process works as well for me. Once in awhile I use both, when I really want to be sure.

No no no! The conversion of tyrosine and phenylalinine to the stimulating neurotransmitters requires vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and vitamin C, so you want to take a morning tyrosine supplement along with those two vitamins. I’m not talking megadoses here, just a reasonable supplement of both vitamins.

You can read most any material about the use of phenylalinine and/or tyrosine for that purpose, and see the importance of using the co-factors B6 and C with them. For example, check Pearson & Shaw’s “Life Extension” books for lots of info on that.

That makes sense. Anyway, I take a multivitamin that includes those things and I take it not so long after taking the Tyrosine, so I was unintentionally taking what you suggest. I suppose it would probably work even better if I took the vitamins at the same time. The point of taking the Tyrosine alone is not to take it at the same time as another amino acid or other foods, as amino acids compete across the blood-brain barrier. I doubt vitamins do. This is for the focus/energy purposes that I mainly take Tyrosine for.

There are a couple of other issues here, too, which you should be aware of:

  1. The use of phenylalanine/tyrosine for this purpose may be associated with increases in blood pressure, although I believe Pearson & Shaw say that phenylalanine is more likely to do that than tyrosine. Be sure to keep an eye on your blood pressure.

  2. I had a couple of friends start using tyrosine that way in the past, and they both reported that after using it for a while every morning, it eventually got to where the the effect seemed to wear off. I suggest that you use the stuff intermittently, so as not to develop a kind of “tolerance” to it.

.

I experimented for 20 yrs buying individual vitamins and minerals you name it, if it said it helps hair growth, i bought it, I bet i was taking 20 bottles of pills and it was not cheap

I found that Ultra Hair by Natures Plus, was more effective than all of them combined. However it is not too expensive. Most of us on the natural board take
Maxi Hair by Country Life…http://www.vitacost.com/Country-Life-Maxi-Hair-Maximized

I also found that timed released biotin, and yes 2000mcg is enough, is important. If it is not timed released, I found that it was almost ineffective, not sure why but my trial and error found this to be true. I found it near impossible to find biotin timed released, individually. However the Maxi hair and ultra hair have it inside timed release

also i supplement it with a good mineral supplement

I do not recommend nizoral shampoo, i found it way too harsh it left my hair so g
dry . it also has hydrochloric acid in it. The cream 2 percent is much more effective. and it stays on your head for hours as opposed to minutes with the shampoo

Thanks, I really appreciate your reply. I don’t actually use Tyrosine for its sexual effects, but what you say is good to know. I use it because it helps my mental focus and energy.

3rd week

Went traveling this week and forgot some of my stuff – i.e. Rogaine and MSM. So I am being inconsistent and need to stop that. But I was consistent with the dutasteride, except didn’t take it one day: I had serious fog brain one day and began to think that there is no way I could keep taking dutasteride every day if it meant having this effect. But I skipped a day and decided that my brain fog may have been somewhat owing to a stressful day and being tired.

I had sex on two different nights while traveling and didn’t have any particular sexual problems. In the first instance, she had to leave early and so going for round two wasn’t a possibility even, but I didn’t feel like I could have done it. In the second instance, the next night, she stayed with me for awhile and I was able to perform a second time that night in terms of erection, but had nearly no ejaculate. Overall, I feel like the immediate dampening of my libido that occurred when I started dut. has itself diminished.

NO VISIBLE RESULTS or hair effects. I still don’t have the scalp itch I had before taking the dut.

I wish you would have told me that before i bought Maxi Hair…the cost of the item is not an issue for me… so, do you recommend Ultra Hair as a better solution? Please advice…thanks.

I started taking Propecia about 7years ago and it literally brought back hair that i lost over the previous 2 years…truly amazing results…i still take it now, but i’m certain this stuff effects one’s libdo, as you’re seeing… be patient with Dutasteride - i’m sure you’ll see very good results…

by the way, where did you pick up the nizoral cream???

PS. i highly recommend the laser comb…that also works incredibly well…

Thanks for your encouragement. Much appreciated. I’ll stick with Dutasteride no matter what for between 6 and 12 months. I just need to be more consistent with all the other stuff. I’ve noticed a lot of people expect immediate results with what they use, but hair growth and results take a fair amount of time. I am tracking my progress on this site for myself and for others to see. People need to be realistic. At 3 weeks, I see no particular results, but frankly I don’t look all that closely because I don’t think it’s worth it to look too closely for at least a couple or three months into a regime.

I get the Nizoral cream at inhousepharmacy.com, the same place where I get generic Dutasteride. Delivery to the US (I imagine Canada too) takes about 10 days. I’ve ordered from them twice and it’s gone smoothly, no problems at all. I was a bit nervous when first ordering.

I don’t get how the laser comb is supposed to work. To be honest, I’ve been skeptical of that. Can you tell me more? What brand do you have?

Thanks for a great post. I have the same question Vivace67 has. Ultimately, it looks like you are recommending Ultra Hair as the absolute best product, but I guess for cost reasons you are saying to just use Maxi Hair. Could you clarify which one you think is better and which one you’d recommend if cost is not an issue?

I stopped the Nizoral shampoo as of two days ago when I got my first shipment of Nizoral cream. I don’t plan on using again, though I didn’t experience hair loss as long as I only used it twice a week.

see my below comparison chart
I might just now change to think that the Maxi Hair is better than the Ultra Hair after looking at the ingredients list

I am not saying the nizoral shampoo does not work, lots of studies say it does, but I found it extremely harsh, and if the active ingredient is Ketoconazole, and that is in the niz cream, I leave the cream on for hours as compared to a minute or so with the shampoo. Be prepared for a shed though, that happened to me with the niz cream, and it was not fun, for a few months in fact i stopped using it, but the hair grew back healthier and more strong but it took a while, I only used it two months . I may start on it again

the niz cream in the japanese study seems to have worked very well with the younger guys and not that well with the older guys, that is either a plus or a minus depending on your age. As with any regimen if you have a reaction to it or side effects , i would evaluate your situation at that point. As with any regimen also there are no guarantees. But there seems to be something with ketoconazole that is beneficial to a lot of guys hair loss.

Yes I do believe the Ultra hair seems to be of higher quality although I have no proof of this, You might want to get a list of the ingredients of the ultra hair and maxi hair and post it here so we can compare the amounts also. It is just my general opinion.
