Hi, I have been on proscar for a number of years and have also been using Nioxin system 2 (only the cleanser) for the same number of years. I shampoo once a day and sometimes either leave my hair to dry naturally or use a hair dryer.
I was wondering whether Nioxin a recommended product by any members of this forum?
Could someone tell me what are the recommended shampoo/conditioner systems they use for those of us who have thinning hair?
I do not use a conditioner, but maybe I should as I heard that shampoo opens the pores, whereas a conditioner closes the pores?
I did try Nizoral 2% once and I think I got a bit scared of it as I noticed a bit of hair loss after usage. But this was a while back and I might have used a concentrated form, i.e. applied it directly to my hair without diluting it with water.
Any help with shampoo/cleanser treatments and general hair care would be most appreciated.

Interesting… I didnt know that there was a supposed relationship between MPB and the inflammatory response. One would think that if inflammation was involved, you would get all the cardinal signs of inflammation i.e. redness, swelling, heat and pain in the scalp area. Maybe the degree of inflammation is restricted to a single pilosebaceous unit, so remains unapparent.
Do you use Piroctone Olamine as your main shampoo? I’ll look into this shampoo at the Body Shop. Many thanks!

It is a major factor.

Yes I do, I also use a shampoo that boosts bloodflow.

Yes, some hair loss experts say that hair loss looks like tissue rejection (an immune response to, for example, solid organ transplantation) on a microscopic level. See http://www.drproctor.com/hair-loss-faq.htm for more info on this.
The Body Shop shampoo that Pete mentioned is excellent, IMHO. See

I’m in Australia and luckily we have that same shampoo with the same active ingredient (Piroctone Olamine)
I’ll grab myself a bottle next week. I did come across another product sold here, containing Piroctone Olamine: ( http://www.moogoo.com.au/category5_1.htm ). I’m guessing no one would know about this one as it’s only sold here in Oz.
May I ask what shampoo you use to boost blood flow? I think you mentioned in another thread that you alternate between the bodyshop’s ginger shampoo, and an essential oils shampoo. Would be great to know your routine and the name of the other product you use.
What about a hair conditioner? Is it recommended? I have heard that shampoos open up the follicles, whereas a conditioner closes them up and thereby adheres to the hair root shaft more strongly.

Thanks for the link. Yeah it does seem similar to tissue rejection. I’ve found other articles on the web making similar claims. I’ll look more into it.
Yep that’s the one! We also have it here in Australia. My Nioxin has slowly run out, so will grab a bottle of Ginger Shampoo from the Body Shop next week.

Nioxin doesn’t really have much of a reputation on hairloss forums.

I’d recommend NANO Shampoo and Conditioner. NANO is a substance that has a similar growth-promoting effect as minoxidil, and may even have a more important maintaining effect than minoxidil. They are Dr. Proctor’s products. Look on his Web site for more information about them.
